Alternative protein processor Meati Foods has received a patent on its base composition of matter containing Neurospora crassa (commercially known as MushroomRoot), the company announced in a release today.
The patent issued to Meati Foods ensures exclusivity over its Neurospora crassa-based inventions until 2039. Meati Foods has already used the MushroomRoot product in applications such as whole-cut steaks, ground meats, seafood, powders and shelf-stable foods — including Meati’s first product line, Eat Meati steaks and cutlets.
The receipt of the patent comes on the heels of the company having completed a study in collaboration with artificial intelligence provider PIPA to identify a range of health benefits derived from the MushroomRoot product — a quick-pace study driven by AI that would have taken years to complete under conventional methods. The study showed that MushroomRoot’s whole food nutrient density addresses prevalent nutrient deficiencies and enhances cardiovascular health, the company says. In addition, rare compounds were identified that may yield further health benefits.
PIPA predictive analytics tool identified 14 key compounds in MushroomRoot that can work together or alone to address gaps in achieving optimal nutrition, the Meati release said. The rare compounds that the tool identified feature very specific potential health benefits that Meati will now attempt to translate into consumer-friendly health claims and deepen scientific understanding of MushroomRoot’s benefits to human health.
