A British company is planning to start production soon in what will become Europe’s largest plant-based food processing facility.
Plant & Bean, formerly a division of Brecks Foods, is set to open a 2.8 million-square-foot plant on 65 acres in Boston, Lincolnshire, about 100 miles north of London. Lines are being installed in the plant, which formerly belonged to pork processor Tulip Ltd., and production is scheduled to begin in January.
The plant will have a planned initial capacity of 55,000 tons a year. Products will include plant-based analogue meats and sausages, as well as protein-based ingredients for further processing. Other functions will include R&D for both agriculture and processing.
Plant & Bean plans to build similar facilities in the United States in 2021 and Asia in 2022.
