Jack in the Box on Oct. 15 debuted two analogue chicken sandwiches -- Jack’s Unchicken and Jack’s Spicy Unchicken -- at select locations in Monterey and Salinas, Calif., and Reno, Nev. The sandwiches use Tyson's Raised & Rooted brand of alternative protein products launched in 2019.
Made from pea protein isolate and Jack in the Box’s traditional crispy breading, "the Unchicken sandwiches deliver mouthwatering taste with a savory crunch and texture sure to rival the competition," promises a news release. They "have the taste, crunch and texture to satisfy even the most dedicated sandwich connoisseur."
Tyson's Raised & Rooted brand first launched chicken nuggets for retail. The formula used pea protein, bamboo fiber, eggs and golden flaxseed. The brand has since launched burgers mixing angus beef with pea protein.
To celebrate the launch of the Unchicken sandwiches, Jack in the Box gave away chicken-scented face masks. The new plant-based sandwiches are available through Dec. 12, or while supplies last.
