Perdue Premium Meat to Close Michigan Processing Plant

Aug. 18, 2023
The St. Clair Shores, Michigan, facility housed the Alexander & Hornung business, which was acquired in 2020.

Perdue Premium Meat Co. (PPMC), a subsidiary of Perdue Farms, has announced the closure of its St. Clair Shores, Mich., processing plant, according to a letter sent to the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity cited by local news outlets. The facility is the home base for the Alexander & Hornung meat-processing business, which PPMC acquired in 2020.

The business is expected to close in early 2024, but most of the 132 employees will be laid off on October 14, the news reports stated.

A company spokesperson said in a statement to Food Processing that the decision to close the business was made “after an extensive business and financial review.”

“A decision like this, affecting our associates and their families, is something we take very seriously, and one that was not made lightly,” the spokesperson added. “We will provide all affected associates a bonus and support services to help them navigate the job market.”
