Saputo Inc. has announced plans to revamp one cheese plant in Wisconsin and close another.
The Montreal-based company will spend $35 million (U.S.) to convert its plant in Reedsburg, about 45 miles northwest of Madison, from mozzarella to goat cheese production. The Reedburg plant’s mozzarella production will be redistributed among other Saputo facilities.
Saputo will close its goat cheese plant in Belmont, Wis., transferring that capacity to Reedsburg and other plants. The initiatives are expected to begin in the second quarter of next year.
“The initiatives we are announcing today will allow us to enhance our manufacturing footprint and drive organic growth,” CEO Lino Saputo said in a statement quoted by the Financial Post.
The initiatives are expected to cost $11.7 million and to confer annual savings of $7 million by fiscal 2025.
