An egg producer will be donating 1.2 million eggs to needy people in New York state, as part of a settlement in a price-gouging case.

Hillandale Farms settled a case brought by State Attorney General Letitia James last year, in which she accused the company of using the pandemic as an excuse to raise prices illegally. The suit alleged that Hillandale’s price for a dozen eggs for one supermarket chain rose from a low of 59 cents at the beginning of 2020 to $2.93 as the year progressed.

Hillandale will donate the eggs to food banks around the state, which will distribute them to food pantries, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. In return for the egg donation, the charges against Hillandale were dismissed.

"Although it is important to note that the approach to pricing commodity eggs in New York has remained consistent for decades, the resolution of this matter reflects Hillandale Farms’ deep concern about the communities we serve," the company said in a statement.
