Class action lawsuits over salmonella poisoning from onions are starting to pile up, with the latest coming Nov. 10 on behalf of a couple from Texas.
The outbreak has caused more than 800 cases of salmonella throughout the country. The Centers for Disease Control in late October identified the problem as white, yellow and red onions imported from Mexico’s Chihuahua state.
While the outbreak is nationwide, many of the cases have been seen in Texas. The latest one claims that a couple living in Tarrant County began experiencing diarrhea, vomiting, severe abdominal cramping, nausea, and dehydration after consuming onions, leading the woman to require “extensive hospitalization,” according to a statement from Ron Simon & Associates, the law firm they retained.
The suit was filed against ProSource Inc. and Keeler Family Farms, two distributors that have recalled tainted onions.
Ron Simon & Associates represents several salmonella victims in this outbreak, including what it claims to be the first such case, on behalf of an Idaho man who was allegedly sickened by onions on a hot dog. Other cases include a young boy who allegedly contracted a salmonella infection from restaurant tacos in August and was still fighting it months later.
