Gotham Greens Opens New 140,000-Square-Foot Greenhouse In Colorado
Gotham Greens has opened its second hydroponic greenhouse in Colorado and 11th nationwide — a 140,000-square-foot facility in Windsor, Colo., that is the first of three new greenhouses the New York-based company is set to open this calendar year.
Gotham Greens — which now owns and operates more than 40 acres (1.8 million square feet) of hydroponic greenhouses across 13 locations in nine states, with additional expansion planned for 2024 — first expanded into the Denver, Colo., metropolitan area in 2020, with the opening of its Aurora facility. The Windsor greenhouse is nearly five times larger than the Aurora facility and will provide more year-round supply of fresh produce to retail, restaurant and foodservice customers throughout the region, the company says.
Of particular focus is the company’s ability to conserve the state’s water supply while providing the fresh produce demanded by consumers in the region. The company release states that as much as 80% of the Colorado River’s water is used for agriculture, endangering the watershed’s reservoir capacity. Gotham Greens is committed to providing fresh food using solutions that conserve vital natural resources, and claims that its hydroponic growing systems allow farms to use up to 95% less water and 97% less land compared to conventional farming.
Meanwhile, the company announced that produce grown at the Windsor facility will be packaged with a resealable lidded film that reduces plastic packaging by more than 40%.
