Former First Lady Michelle Obama is one of the founders of Plezi Nutrition, which apparently just launched with its inaugural product being a healthy drink for children aged 6-12.
The beverage, also called Plezi, has 75% less sugar than the average leading fruit juices, no added sugar, plus fiber and nutrients. The drink comes in tropical punch, orange smash, sour apple and blueberry blast. It’s apparently available at Target, Sprouts and Walmart.com.
An 8-oz. bottle has 35 calories, 2g of fiber and 7g of sugar (none of it added sugar); also a little potassium, magnesium and zinc, plus 100% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin C (90mg).
“We’re starting with a beverage because we know much concern parents and pediatricians have about sugary drinks,” Obama writes on the company website. “Once kids become school-aged, we all know drinking only water and milk isn’t a reality.”
As first lady, Obama’s pet project was children’s nutrition and childhood obesity.
“I’ve learned that if you want to change the game on this issue [children’s nutrition], you can’t just rally support from the outside. You’ve got to get inside. You’ve got to find ways to change the food and beverage industry itself. So that’s exactly what I’m doing.”
Her note also promises to invest 10% of profits “back into the broader movement to promote kids’ health.” While not specific, the website implies more products may be coming.
