Lifeway Foods, which brought fermented milk drink kefir to this country, has partnered with Toronto pet food company Open Farm to bring probiotics and gut health to dogs.

Today (March 24) the two companies announced the launch of GoodGut, “designed as a foundational, everyday kibble to support digestive health and whole-body wellness from puppyhood through adulthood,” the two said.

As pet parents increasingly apply human wellness standards to their pets, digestive health has moved from niche to necessity, according to the companies. Today, 95% of pet parents consider their pets part of the family, and more than 70% rank digestive health as a top wellness concern. Over 90% say it directly influences their purchasing decisions.

Each recipe of GoodGut features a complete system of prebiotics, probiotics and postbiotics so gut health is built into the food, eliminating the need to reactively manage symptoms or stack multiple products. GoodGut is powered by CanineCulture, a proprietary blend of 10 probiotic strains developed in partnership with Lifeway Foods.

Each recipe delivers supplement level probiotics with 2 billion colony-forming units (CFUs) per pound. Most traditional kibbles with probiotics measure CFUs in the millions, according to Open Farm. The recipes also include prebiotic fibers.
