Rollout: Celebrating the United States of America’s Semiquincentennial Anniversary - Part 2
Semiquincentennial may be a mouthful, but America’s 250th birthday continues to inspire a wave of patriotic food and beverage innovation. Following our first roundup of red, white and blue-inspired launches, processors and marketers are rolling out even more limited-edition flavors, nostalgic packaging and Americana-themed products ahead of July 4. From Rocket Pop baked beans to commemorative coffee canisters and stars-and-stripes baking mixes, the celebration is only getting bigger as the holiday approaches.
Baked Beans Get in the Spirit
Bush’s Beans is shaking up summer cookouts with the launch of three limited-edition baked beans varieties inspired by classic American foods. Tossed in a tangy sauce with a punch of dill pickle, Bush’s Dill Pickle Baked Beans serve up a bold, savory bite that stands out in any barbecue spread. With a blend of brown sugar, cinnamon spice and sweet apple pie flavor, Bush’s Apple Pie Baked Beans feature an indulgent, dessert-inspired twist on a classic cookout side. Bursting with notes of cherry, lime and blue raspberry, Bush’s Rocket Pop Baked Beans offer a sweet, playful take inspired by the iconic frozen treat. Nostalgic and very unexpected, this flavor packs a firework of fruity taste.
Red, White and Blue Ice Cream
The Prairie Farms family of companies introduces Red, White & Boom Ice Cream, a heroes-edition offering available from both Prairie Farms and Hiland Dairy. More than a seasonal flavor, the new flavor reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to Folds of Honor, with a pledge to fund 50 $5,000 academic scholarships for the families of America’s fallen or disabled military and first responders.
Red, White & Boom also represents an important step forward in the company’s commitment to eliminating artificial colors, aligning with growing consumer preference for more natural ingredients and clean-label products. The product features strawberry, vanilla, and blueberry flavored ice creams.
Breakout the Fancy Juice
Welch’s invites consumers to “break out the fancy juice” with Sparkling Blueberry when they toast to America’s 250th year. The new limited-edition flavor also celebrates Welch’s 150-year legacy of American grower-ownership. The commemorative packaging includes a QR code inviting consumers to learn more about the real American families behind the brand and spotlighting the service of Welch’s veteran grower-owners. Blueberry joins returned seasonal offerings of Sparkling Strawberry and Sparkling White Grape.
“We wanted to create something elevated and easy to serve, fun to share and special for the whole family to enjoy together,” says Andrew Hartshorn, chief brand and innovation officer at Welch’s. “As a company proudly owned by over 600 American family farmers, introducing this seasonal lineup during America’s 250th anniversary felt especially meaningful.”
Baking Up Some Stars and Stripes
The Pillsbury Funfetti brand from Hometown Food Co. is getting festive with its new Stars & Stripes lineup, which features cake mixes and frostings in vibrant patriotic colors. At the center of the lineup is the Funfetti Stars & Stripes Sprinkle Cake Mix featuring Pillsbury’s cake mix’s signature moist texture with colorful candy bits.
Also joining the lineup is the Pillsbury Funfetti Stars & Stripes Red Swirl Cake Mix, which includes separate red and white cake pouches that swirl together to create a striking, bakery-style design when baked. The result is a visually stunning dessert that captures the spirit of celebration in every slice. The brand also has a new trio of festive vanilla frostings in red, white and blue colors. Blue and red are exclusive to Walmart.
Limited-Edition “Sweet” Packaging
Domino Sugar and C&H Sugar, brands of ASR Group, are launching limited-edition commemorative packaging, highlighting their partnership with America250. The limited-edition designs were created for the brands’ most popular products: the 4-lb. Premium Pure Cane granulated sugar bag and individual granulated sugar packets. The designs incorporate the America250 logo, which recognizes their sponsorship. The bags honor the country’s historic anniversary with a patriotic red, white and blue color palette.
The C&H version features iconic Americana illustrations like the American eagle, the Golden Gate Bridge and a star-spangled banner along the bottom of the design. The Domino version incorporates patriotic illustrations like the Statue of Liberty, the American eagle and fireworks, all of which are synonymous with Independence Day celebrations. Both brands offer a commemorative series of six collectible single-serve packets of granulated sugar.
Each packet features a curated anniversary design depicting classic American hallmarks and moments, from the Liberty Bell to the Syng silver inkstand used by the country’s founders when signing the Declaration of Independence. Coupled with phrases such as “We the People” and “Stars and Stripes,” the designs allow consumers to connect with America’s historic anniversary.
“We set out to design packaging that celebrates the spirit of this historic milestone while reflecting the values of sweetness, tradition and bringing people together,” says Corina Flushing, senior director of marketing. “The star-filled blue banner on the C&H packaging, inspired by the American flag, the fireworks accents on the Domino packaging and intricate details on every sugar packet embody our nation’s legacy while creating moments of joy and delight for everyone who shares in the sweetness.”
Red, White and Brew
J.M. Smucker Co. is helping Americans celebrate the red, white and brew with Folgers Classic Roast coffee decked out in limited-edition packaging. Inside each package is the same medium roast coffee that Americans have been enjoying since the 1850s. The commemorative packaging can be found on the brand’s canisters of ground coffee, jars of instant coffee and boxes of Keurig K-Cup Pods.
