Equipment Round Up: Motors and Drives

July 9, 2010
Rev up your processing engines as we take a look at the latest motors and drives available for the food processing industry.
Go for the goldThe Dodge Quantis Gold, a C-face energy efficient gearmotor, combines Dodge Quantis ILH (in-line helical) and RHB (right angle helical bevel) C-face gearmotors with Baldor-Reliance Super-E Premium Efficient Motors to create the most energy efficient gearmotor package available. Motor and gearbox combinations up to 10hp are pre-selected and are available with an easy-to-order single part number. They feature NEMA clamp-collar design, foot mounted housing configurations, standard inch output shafts, nitrile input and output lip seals, A1 mounting, and Mobilegear 600 XP 220 oil. In addition, the RHB unit offers flange mounted housing configurations and tapered hollow bores with twin-tapered bushings.Baldor Electric Co.; Fort Smith, Ark.

Save the bearings!Variable frequency drives (VFDs) adjust the speed output of alternating current motors and save huge amounts of energy in food processing plants. But what will save the bearings? VFD-controlled motors inherently produce destructive shaft currents that must be redirected around the bearings; otherwise, unmitigated electrical currents initiated by the VFD and induced by the motor shaft destroy the bearings. The Current Diverter Ring (CDR) safely diverts these currents and saves the motor bearings.Inpro/Seal Co.; Rock Island, Ill.

A catalog fullWith a 2010 catalog containing more than 300,000 products plus 900,000 products available through the web site, Grainger has grown to more than a motor distributor. But motors are the company's foundation, and thousands of them are available in print and online. Search the web site for stainless steel and washdown-duty motors for your food processing application or for other parts of the plant.W.W. Grainger Inc.; Lake Forest, Ill.

Delivers powerThe QT Power Chain II belt drive system consists of a synchronous belt, sprockets, bushings and idlers that are all designed to work together for power transmission – whether the application is low speed or high speed. When compared with standard roller chain, this belt drive system provides important performance advantages and reduced overall costs. The new sizes of belts and sprockets along with increased power ratings (up to 40 percent higher than its predecessor) allow these drive systems to be designed in widths narrower and more compact than ever before.TB Wood's/Altra Industrial Motion; South Beloit, Wis.
