Frito-Lay, Quaker Open Greenhouse to Push Compostable Packaging Innovation

April 4, 2023
PepsiCo expects facility to accelerate innovation by shortening the timeline from concept to certification.

Frito-Lay and Quaker have opened a new Greenhouse Learning Center at its R&D headquarters, designed to test, measure and analyze compostable packaging with an aim to speed up the rate of innovation.

According to a release from the company, the Greenhouse Learning Center gives the R&D packaging team the ability to test biodegradation properties of compostable packages in different environments to accelerate learnings, validate lab results through simultaneous, real-time experiments as packaging formulations are improved and iterate packaging solutions quicker.

PepsiCo believes the facility will help it achieve its goal to design 100 percent of packaging to be recyclable, compostable, biodegradable or reusable by 2025, and that the timeline for innovative packaging solutions to reach certification-ready status from testing could be shortened significantly with this investment.

It is the first facility of its kind at PepsiCo, located adjacent to an existing prototyping lab where compostable packaging is created for the company. PepsiCo expects to use the facility to educate partners, stakeholders and visitors through training sessions as well.
