Vital Proteins Debuts New Paper-Based Canister for Its Collagen Peptides Products
Vital Proteins, a processor of collagen-based wellness products owned by Nestlé Health Science, has announced it is transitioning the packaging material for its collagen peptides product from plastic to an 80-percent paperboard canister — the first significant packaging change in its history, and one angled toward meeting consumer interest in companies using more sustainable packaging options.
All of the brand’s collagen peptides products are expected to complete this transition by 2026, the company said. Vital Proteins Unflavored Collagen Peptides is the first variety to make the switch in its club store channels, with national retail accounts for the product transitioning over in September 2024. Vital Proteins has spent three years researching and developing the new paper-based canisters, with will reduce plastic use across all Vital Proteins canister products more than 90%, or roughly 1,800 metric tons (nearly 4 million pounds). Further, the canister is curbside recyclable, which Vital Proteins hopes will help reduce post-consumer waste.
The canister’s design has been updated as well to include a pull-tab, resealable lid, eliminating the screw-top lid of the past design. Vital Proteins also put the new canister design through “extensive stability testing, while the structural integrity of the canister was also thoroughly reviewed,” the company noted. The packaging material is splash-proof and moisture-resistant, with a waterproof polymer inner layer and an outer varnish that is water-based and water-resistant.
The company also continues to phase plastic scoops from its canisters, aiming to be 100% free of the plastic scoops across its entire portfolio by the end of 2025 — an initiative it embarked upon in 2022.
