A cat food has come on the Canadian market made with protein that is up to 92% derived from insects.
Catit, a Montreal-based marketer of cat food and accessories, has rolled out Catit Nuna, a kibble that it advertises as “made with up to 92% sustainable protein.” That protein is derived from whole grubs, which the company describes as “simply bursting with protein, vitamins, omega 6, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and minerals.” The grubs are dried and ground into flour to make the kibble.
Catit is marketing Nuna mostly on its green appeal, as being made with protein that doesn’t have the environmental impact of meat. In its product announcement, the company states, “With almost 500 million domestic cats on Earth, we need to start thinking about reducing our ecological paw print! We can make a real difference by simply substituting the meat in our cat food for sustainable insect protein!”
