USDA to Study Food Supply Chain

April 22, 2021

The USDA will conduct a comprehensive examination of America’s food supply chains, with the goal of shoring them up and making them more equitable, the agency announced April 21.

The action by the USDA is in response to President Biden executive order of Feb. 21 calling for “resilient, diverse, and secure supply chains.” The USDA’s goals include: bolstering local and regional food systems; creating fairer and more competitive markets; supporting and promoting consumers’ nutrition security, particularly for low-income populations; and addressing the needs of socially disadvantaged and small to mid-sized producers.

“We have an opportunity to take the lessons we’ve learned from the COVID-19 pandemic and apply those to transforming our nation’s food system from the inside out, including our supply chains,” said Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. “USDA plans to tackle this supply chain assessment holistically – looking across a full range of risks and opportunities.”

Comments on the USDA’s initiative are now being accepted and will close on May 21.
