Plant Sterols Provide 'Heart-Healthy' Label Claim
Cargill’s CoroWise Naturally Sourced Cholesterol Reducer brand of plant sterols can be good news for food and beverage manufacturers seeking ways to develop heart healthy products. The FDA says plant sterols may help reduce the risk of heart disease when part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol. In fact, the overall beneficial effect of consuming 0.8g per day of plant sterols has been found to reduce LDL cholesterol by 8 to 15 percent. In 2003, FDA allowed some foods and beverages containing plant sterols to use the heart health claim on labels.Applications include:
  • Breakfast cereal
  • Granola & nutritional bars
  • Juice-based beverages
  • Blended juice/milk smoothie beverages
  • Yogurts
