PepsiCo is formalizing a policy of flexibility that encourages working from home, with a goal of moving office attendance from 65% down to 50%, the company announced June 14.
Under the “Work that Works” policy, “associates along with their managers choose what work can be done remotely and what needs to be done in their PepsiCo office,” the company said in a statement. This has evolved from the shifts in behaviors and attitudes brought about by the pandemic.
“We’ve looked at the challenges and changes of the last year for insights on shaping new ways of working,” says Ronald Schellekens, PepsiCo EVP and chief human resources officer. “With Work that Works, PepsiCo offers corporate associates the flexibility they need to create balance and achieve even greater success.”
PepsiCo will make tools available to facilitate the balance of in-office and at-home work, including mobile apps to reserve workspaces and meeting rooms; “occupancy sensors and integrated meeting technology” to help schedule meetings with office and at-home participants; and Smart Analytics, described as “a tool that uses data about office flow, occupancy forecasting and more to create algorithmic recommendations.”
PepsiCo cited research from Gallup showing that employers who offer flexible work see a 15% increase in productivity, 31% less absenteeism and 10% less turnover.
