American Sugar Refining Inc., owner of the Domino brand, will close its historic Yonkers, N.Y., refinery at the end of this year, part of an optimization of its U.S. manufacturing network.
The huge plant on the Hudson River has been operating since 1900, according to local reports. 300 workers will be affected.
A June 20 announcement noted ASR Group last year acquired the Rochester, N.Y.-based sweetener company IngredientsPlus, with production facilities in Lakeville, N.Y., and Landisville, Pa., to service the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. ASR is constructing a new bulk transfer and liquid melt station in the Northeast and doubling the size of its Buffalo, N.Y., plant -- all of which apparently make the Yonkers plant expendable.
