Molson Coors Beverage Co. has announced that president and CEO Gavin Hattersley will retire from the company and its board of directors by Dec. 31, 2025, according to a release from the company. Hattersley has served in the role for more than six years and has spent 28 years in the beer industry overall.
The board is launching a search for Hattersley’s replacement, considering both internal and external candidates, with the intention for the next CEO to build upon the success of Hattersley’s Revitalization and Acceleration plans for Molson Coors. Those plans saw the company strengthen core brands, target premiumization for the portfolio and expand beyond beer while investing in its capabilities and people. During his tenure, Molson Coors delivered its two highest years of annual net sales revenue and its two highest years of underlying income before taxes.
Molson Coors has premiumized its global portfolio and transformed itself into a total beverage company, with the acquisition of Blue Run Spirits and a majority stake in Zoa energy drinks standing as more recent moves toward this goal under Hattersley’s watch. The company also entered into a joint venture with D.G. Yeungling and Sons and a relationship with The Coca-Cola Co. during his time — and secured the commercialization rights to Fever-Tree in the U.S.
Hattersley entered the beer industry with South African Breweries (SAB) in 1997, then served in leadership roles at SABMiller, MillerCoors and eventually Molson Coors. He was the first South African to move into the U.S. Miller business when SAB acquired it in 2002. Hattersley was heavily involved in the creation of the MillerCoors U.S. joint venture in 2008, serving as its first CFO and later its CEO. He became CEO of Molson Coors in September 2019 at its formation.
