Morton Salt Girl Joins Advertising Walk of Fame

Sept. 30, 2014
100-year-old icon voted in by social media.
The Morton Salt Girl, now in her centennial year, was added to the Advertising Week Walk of Fame on Madison Avenue in New York City on Sept. 29. She was inducted into the sidewalk along with two bears: Smoky the Bear and Snuggle Bear.

Brand icons are nominated for the Advertising Week Walk of Fame each year, and are decided by the general public. Advertising Week administered a poll on its Facebook page so fans could vote for their favorite icons.

The honor caps a memorable year for the Morton Salt Girl's centennial, including a public celebration in her hometown city of Chicago on Sept. 26 that included a 10-ft. tall LED in the shape of a Morton table salt canister – the product that made the girl with the umbrella famous a century ago, as well as the slogan, "When it rains, it pours."

It was impossible for us to find on Morton's webite who designed the salt girl. Other sources credit her to advertising agency N.W. Ayer and Co.

On the Walk of Fame, she joins other food & beverage industry icons the Coca-Cola Polar Bears, Colonel Sanders, the Vlasic Stork, Twinkie the Kid and Juan Valdez, as well as nonfood mascots the Energizer Bunny the Aflac duck and others.
