Hormel Foods Enters Back-to-Back Deals on Renewable Energy

March 9, 2021
The Minnesota-based food company has entered into two deals in the last month surrounding renewable energy.

When it comes to renewable energy, Hormel Foods is moving like the wind.

In February, the food company announced it was working with Duluth, Minn.-based Allete Clean Energy on a renewable energy sale agreement for the energy company's Caddo wind farm. The Caddo County, Oklahoma site is still under construction; however, upon its expected 2021 year-end completion, the 303-megawatt site will help Hormel achieve close to 50% of its goal when the project is completed.

Allete Clean Energy indicated it had entered into renewable energy sale agreements with both the Oshkosh Corporation and Hormel Foods for a combined 100 megawatts.

Less than a month after announcing the sales agreement with Allete Clean Energy, the Austin, Minn.-based Hormel announced it had agreed to a long-term commitment to purchase wind energy from Denmark-based Orsted’s Haystack Wind project in Nebraska. The Haystack Wind farm, which is currently under construction and expected to be operational this year, will produce 298 megawatts of power.

“Hormel Foods has committed to match 100% of its domestic energy use with renewable sourcing by 2030,” said Tom Raymond, director of environmental sustainability for Hormel.
