Petsource, a contract manufacturer of freeze-dried pet foods, announced the completion of a $75 million expansion to its Seward, Neb., processing plant — a facility that just opened in 2020. Petsource is an indirect, wholly owned and independently operated subsidiary of Scoular, an Omaha, Neb.-based, $10 billion-plus agribusiness that provides grain and ingredients to numerous industries.
The expansion triples the capacity of the plant, according to a release from the company, adding 70,000 sq. ft. of processing space as demand for freeze-dried products in pet foods continues to rise. The expansion created 75 new jobs, bringing the total workforce at the Seward facility to more than 150 employees.
The Seward facility was one of the first in the nation to provide co-man customers with everything from recipe development to raw meat processing, freeze-drying and packaging under one roof when it opened in 2020, the release noted. This expansion is part of a larger strategic plan by Scoular to grow along with the rest of the pet food industry.
