Fooducate Offers Ingredient, Health information in handy iPhone App

Why the near obession with an electronic device? I'd have to say it's because of applications that make it easier for me to access information when I need it and without having to search in 5 different spots in a computer on another floor.

Such is the case with the new iPhone App, Foodcuate.  I don't claim to be an expert on food ingredients or the composition of my favorite oatmeal. Apps like this help me understand the parts of the food label I might otherwise be confused about. 

The app, which is free on iTunes claims:

✓ Created by dietitians and concerned parents
✓ Over 160,000 unique products and growing daily
✓ Simplified information helps you make better choices

The creators of the app also note that the the app will allow consumers to 'get to see the stuff manufacturers don't want you to notice' such as:

• excessive sugar
• tricky trans fats
• additives and preservatives
• high fructose corn syrup
• controversial food colorings

While the newly-downloaded-to-my-phone app looks fascinating, the last bullet points give me pause. Am I naive about the industry I work for or are manufacturers really hiding what this app claims they're hiding?

Members of the food industry, I turn to you on this one: is this the latest fear-mongering technique to call attention for the new dietary guidelines  or should food manufacturers start getting worried?
