Kitchen audit

March 23, 2009

What’s filling up the shelves, nooks, and crannies in America’s kitchens? The NPD Group knows. Every three years NPD asks Americans to report on what appliances, cookware, and utensils they own, food ingredients they have on hand, and usage and sources of recipes. Findings from the latest NPD Complete Kitchen Audit, which surveyed a U.S. representative sample of adults, 18 and older, in 2008, includes: four in 10 homemakers/respondents use a recipe once a week to make any kind of dish; a cookbook owned for more than two years is the top recipe source; sixty-one percent of households read or look at the newspaper food section; solid pack pumpkin is the top pie filling on hand among households that consume homemade pies; and a sandwich maker/press is owned by 17 percent of households. In fact, the sandwich remains the number one food consumed.
