With nearly 2 percent of the U.S. population plagued by an allergy to nuts, many candy and cookie factories lose out on precious consumers. Lofthouse Cookies, a brand by ConAgra Foods Inc., has turned the tides with a new nut-free facility. On July 1, Lofthouse opened a facility in Ogden, Utah that is completely nut-free, allowing some customers the delectable option of satisfying their frosted cookie desires despite having a nut allergy.
Because only two of Lofthouse Cookies’ recipes called for nuts, the shift was not nearly as difficult. The two cookies which do involve nuts, peanut butter cookies and white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, were moved to a facility in South Beloit, Ill. that was already not nut-free.
This transition will be visible on the packaging of some Lofthouse Cookies in stores soon. There will be signs in stores alerting the change to nut-free, as well as the statement “Maufactured in a Nut Free Facility” on the cookie packaging.
