General Mills has become the latest big food company to enter the alternative protein market, rolling out a new brand of vegan cream cheese.

Bold Cultr spread is made with non-dairy whey protein, developed by Perfect Day, a food technology startup. Other ingredients include pea protein, palm oil, starches and gums. It was developed through G-Works, General Mills’ technology accelerator. The process involves substitutes for milk protein developed through fermentation.

“This first product from Bold Cultr is proof positive that we’re finding new ways to test and learn outside of our core portfolio and in a whitespace of the food industry,” Doug Martin, General Mills’ chief disruptive growth officer, said in a statement. “I’m proud of the entrepreneurial spirit behind the Bold Cultr team, who took a big idea and is making it a reality.”

Bold Cultr is on sale online, through a dedicated website, and in select Hy-Vee supermarkets in Minnesota. General Mills plans to widen distribution in the next few months.
