Corazonas Foods Rolls Out Heart-Healthy Bars with Plant Sterols
With 83 million Americans afflicted with cardiovascular disease, the market for heart-healthy products is shifting from general heart maintenance to risk-factor reduction. In 2011, an impressive one-third of all grocery shoppers sought out “reduces the risk of heart disease” claims on food labels, according to data from the Food Marketing Institute. Corazonas Foods is helping consumers on their quest with new non-GMO Heartbar Oatmeal Squares.
The company has long been formulating heart-healthy snack foods enhanced with plant sterols, which, with more than 140 human clinical studies over the past 50 years, have been shown to reduce low-density lipoprotein (bad) cholesterol levels, typically by 8-10 percent. Adding plant sterols as an ingredient to foods is a safe and convenient approach to dietary management of cholesterol.
In efforts to appeal to consumers looking for non-GMO foods, the company is now using recently introduced non-GMO Protanica plant sterols in its product development, which are compatible with non-GMO verified foods and have been clinically tested and demonstrated to be safe and effective.
