Nestle U.S. Ice Creams Cleaning Up Labels

Removing artificial colors and flavors, high-fructose corn syrup and GMOs.

Nestlé Dreyer’s Ice Cream, which claims to be "the largest ice cream maker in the world," in April announced it had already begun rolling out products with simplified ingredient lists, including the removal of artificial colors and flavors, high-fructose corn syrup and GMO ingredients.

The changes, not all of which are complete, will involve more than 100 products, primarily in six "iconic" brands: Dreyer’s, Häagen-Dazs, Outshine, Skinny Cow, Nestlé Ice Cream and Drumstick.

"Other noteworthy accomplishments include the use of fresh milk from cows not treated with rBST, the addition of more real fruit or fruit juice and a reduction in sugar by an average of 11 percent on select products," said a company release. Also of note: In December of last year, Nestlé announced it will transition to using only cage-free eggs in all of its U.S. food products, including ice cream, within the next five years.
