Kellogg Recalls Eggo Waffles in 25 States

Sept. 21, 2016
The Battlecreek, Mich., company says it's recalling some 10,000 cases of Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles that could possibly be contaminated with the bacteria listeria.

Kellogg Co. announced Sept. 19 it will recall approximately 10,000 cases of Eggo Nutri-Grain Whole Wheat Waffles because they could possibly be contaminated with the bacteria listeria. Kellogg's website reports that no other Eggo products are impacted by the recall, which is being done voluntarily. No one has fallen sick yet, due to the potentially-tainted waffles, Kellogg says, and added that it's taking the action as part of a "commitment to the health and safety of the people who eat (Kellogg) foods."

Based in Battlecreek, Mich., the company said the recalled waffles are available in 10-count packs with "Best if used by" dates of November 21, 2017 and November 22, 2017. The dates can be found on the side of the package. The waffle cartons are marked with the UPC Code 38000 40370. Images of the product can be found at www.kelloggs.com/eggorecall.

Listeria can cause serious infections in children, the frail or elderly, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, abdominal pain and diarrhea. In pregnant women, listeria can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. Previous product recalls related to listeria included Blue Bell ice cream, frozen vegetables and raw milk.

The recall resulted after a series of routine tests the company conducts identified the potential for contamination. "As soon as the company learned of a potential concern, it moved quickly to identify any foods that might be impacted and resolve the issue," Kellogg's website states.

The company asks that people who purchased affected product discard it and contact the company for a full refund.
