Salmonella Scare Prompting More Food Companies To Pull Peanut Butter Products

Food processors, manufacturers and stores are pulling potentially-tainted peanut butter products from their shelves.

Last week, we reported that Kellogg's Company was removing peanut butter snacks off shelves in light of a potential salmonella scare. As of January 19, additional food processors as well as some stores are pulling their peanut butter products as well:

General Mills Issues Voluntary Recall of LÄRABAR and JamFrakas Peanut Butter Snack Bars

According the General Mills release, the recall is limited to two flavors of snack bars (LÄRABAR Peanut Butter Cookie flavor snack bars and JamFrakas Peanut Butter Blisscrisp flavor snack bars).

FDA Confirms Salmonella in Previously-Recalled Austin Sandwich Cracker Product

Kellogg's Company issued this release following last week's potential scare. According to David Mackay, president and CEO, Kellogg Company, "We apologize to our consumers and customers, and we can't emphasize enough our disappointment and deep regret about this situation. The food industry upholds certain operating standards and we are proud that we exceed these standards in our facilities. Events of the last week suggest there was a breach in this supplier's process that is unacceptable to Kellogg, our customers and our consumers."

Meijer Announces Voluntary Recall for Some Meijer Brand Peanut Butter Crackers and Ice Cream Because of Possible Health Risk
Grocery retailer Meijer is recalling two types of its Meijer Brand crackers and two types of Meijer Brand ice cream sold in all of its stores and gas stations in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Kentucky. According to the FDA release, all sell-by dates are impacted by this recall. Specifically, Meijer has recalled the following items:

    * Meijer Cheese and Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, UPC #0-41250-56235
    * Meijer Toasty Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers, UPC #0-41250-56239
    * Meijer Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream, UPC #00000007-19283-96635-3
    * Meijer Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream, UPC #00000007-19283-96843-2

McKee Foods Corporation Announces Voluntary Nationwide Recall Because Of Possible Health Risk

Little Debbie snack manufacturer McKee Foods Corportation also issued a recall of two of its peanut butter sandwich crackers beause of potential salmonella contamination. The products are: Little Debbie Peanut Butter Toasty sandwich crackers — all sizes and Little Debbie Peanut Butter Cheese sandwich crackers — all sizes.
