Arcadia Biosciences Inc. has developed safflower plants with seeds containing 65 percent GLA (gamma-linolenic acid) in oil. The company promotes the oil as a more cost-effective and convenient source of the health-promoting omega-6 fatty acid. Higher levels of GLA in seed oils offers significant opportunities for more readily achieving the health benefits of GLA. GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid with health benefits that are similar and complementary to the benefits of the fish-oil derived omega-3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. GLA is a natural anti-inflammatory with benefits for cardiac, joint, skin and neurological health. Commercial production of the oil is expected begin in about 24 months.
